Scotland celebrates Hogmanay (New Year) with bagpipes and dancing in the street. At midnight, everyone sings 'Auld Lang Syne' by Robert Burns. Soon after, families go first footing β visiting friends and relations. Burns Night is on 25 January. People eat haggis (a dish made from liver, cereals and fat) and read poems by Robert Burns. The Highland Games take place in summer. Athletes toss the caber (throw a large tree trunk) and wear kilts. The Edinburgh Festival in August includes theatre, opera, classical music, comedy and the Military Tattoo.
